![]() How much Alfvénic waves could contribute to the corona’s temperature overall isn’t clear. Plus, coronal holes are cooler than other parts of the Sun, and it looks like the magnetic waves deposit more energy in the cooler regions than in the atmosphere’s warmer parts at the heights both teams observed. The team is quick to point out that the results only give an upper limit - the lower limit is still zero. One team went on to calculate that the energy dissipated could provide up to 70% of that needed to heat the polar coronal hole and accelerate the fast solar wind. This energy would then be conducted by particle motion upward and outward. They both found that the wave energy dropped off rapidly within the lowest quarter or so of the solar atmosphere, suggesting that the energy is somehow being dumped into the corona’s lowest region, where temperatures already reach 1 million kelvin. The two teams used this line broadening to measure how much energy the Alfvénic waves carry at different heights in the corona. Such jets could help heat the Sun's atmosphere, although researchers debate how much of a role they actually play. This extra line broadening correlates directly to the presence of Alfvénic waves, because the magnetic waves slosh the ions at a velocity that depends on the waves’ energy.Įrupting jets of gas show green in this false-color image by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory. The corona’s spectral lines can look wider due to the movement of hot, ionized gas along the line of sight. The astronomers observed spectral lines from the ionized gas in the coronal hole. It’s from these regions that the particles that make up the fast solar wind stream forth, whizzing through space at 800 kilometers per second. In coronal holes the Sun’s magnetic field lines stream out straight, instead of curving back down again in big loops. Now, two independent teams have used observations by the Hinode spacecraft to cement the role these magnetic ripples play on the Sun.īoth teams used Hinode’s Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer to observe a hole in the corona over the Sun’s south pole. Last year, McIntosh and his colleagues discovered these waves permeate both the corona and the transition zone between the corona and the chromosphere. They were first suggested as a driving force behind both the corona’s heat and the acceleration of the fast solar wind in the 1940s, but they weren’t observed until 2007, when a team of astronomers including Scott McIntosh (High Altitude Observatory, National Center for Atmospheric Research) caught sight of them by using the Coronal Multichannel Polarimeter, then at the National Solar Observatory in New Mexico. Perhaps more convincingly, the solution - called Alfvénic waves - might explain how the fastest particles streaming out from the Sun attain such high speeds.Īlfvénic waves are oscillations that move along magnetic field lines like the vibrations in a plucked guitar string. ![]() But two new studies in the Astrophysical Journal suggest that one possible solution could pan out. The blazing corona mystery remains unsolved. The fast solar wind is thought to stream out of such coronal holes. The solar wind is, in a sense, just an extension of the Sun's atmosphere that engulfs all of the planets.A close-up look by the STEREO spacecraft in 2008 shows a large, dark hole in the solar corona in the Sun's southern polar region. The upper corona gradually turns into the solar wind, a flow of plasma that moves outward through our solar system into interstellar space. The uppermost portion of the Sun's atmosphere is called the corona, and is surprisingly much hotter than the Sun's surface ( photosphere)! Solar Wind CoronaĪ thin transition region, where temperatures rise sharply, separates the chromosphere from the vast corona above. Its name comes from the Greek root chroma (meaning color), for it appears bright red when viewed during a solar eclipse. The lower region of the solar atmosphere is called the chromosphere. NCAR's High Altitude Observatory (corona) and Luc Viatour (chromosphere)ĭid you know that the Sun has an atmosphere? Today soldiers from many countries serve away from their loved ones in combat or deployed far from home. Lili Marlene expressed that dream perhaps more than any song in history. The never has been a war where military men, Soldiers, Sailors, Marines and Airmen who have left their loves behind have not dreamed of them. Her recordings of the song are still popular. It has been reported translated and performed in 48 languages around the world. Marlene Dietrich performed it often in USO shows for US Servicemen during the war. Marlene Dietrich performing in front of American Soldiers in World War II The British High command did not appreciate soldiers singing it in German and songwriter Tommy Conner wrote an English version which was recorded by Anne Shelton in 1944. The popularity of the song spread to others including Americans. One has to imagine his longing for his own “Dearest Lu” his wife in Germany. The song was not just popular among the Axis it was popular among Allied soldiers beginning with the Australians and New Zealanders serving with the British 8 th Army in North Africa. ![]() Field Marshal Erwin Rommel of the Afrika Korps had a soft spot for the song and requested that it be played nightly and from then on the song was played at 9:55 PM every night by Radio Belgrade.įield Marshal Erwin Rommel requested that Lili Marleen be played nightly Goebbels ordered it banned but reluctantly changed his mind in response to a barrage of letters sent to the station by German and other Axis soldiers across Europe. A lieutenant working for the station picked up a copy of the recording in a Vienna record store and began to play it. However it was liked by those in the military and it found its way into the programming of the German Military Radio Service which had taken over Radio Belgrade. It was recorded in 1939 by Lale Anderson but was not liked by the Nazi Propaganda Minster Josef Goebbels. Sometimes called the Soldatenlieder it was written as a poem by a World War One soldier of the Imperial German Army named Hans Liep, a school teacher drafted into the Army. In the Second World War a song did just that. It is seldom in the history of war that something transcends hatred and touches hearts of soldiers of opposing sides. When the starting signal sounded for the second time that day, Tallent bounded toward the ocean with her fellow female competitors, who plunged themselves into the frigid water and began to swim.Īs the females fought the pounding surf behind him, Kieffer emerged from the water at the end of the first leg, his stomach churning. As she stood on the Point Mugu beach, her competitive spirit came alive again. Tallent is now a seasoned triathlete, helping the Air Force women's team win gold medals in each of the three Armed Forces Triathlons in which she competed from 2010 to 2012. Tallent was drawn to the diverse challenges and test of mental and physical stamina triathlons provide. "Triathlons brought me back to my competitive mindset." "There was a time I only worked out to max my test," said Tallent, 710th Combat Operations Squadron flight commander. But like most avid athletes, the hiatus was only temporary. Tallent, a life-long swimmer, decided to lay down her goggles and cap and drifted away from the sport after her freshman year of college. As the athletes embraced the salt water and started to swim, Tallent and her fellow female competitors, anxious to begin their race, lined up where the males stood moments before. From then on, he had a passion for pushing himself beyond his perceived limits - which led him to the triathlon starting line that afternoon .Īs the crowd silenced, the starting signal sounded and the race began, the male participants dashed across the beach and into the Pacific Ocean as they began the first leg of the race. The moment he crossed the finish line, Kieffer knew the previous six months of intense training had not been in vain. On the day of the ironman competition, he stood next to the 2,500 other athletes and let his competitive nature take over. "At that point, I had never swum more than 100 yards, hadn't biked since I was 10 years old and had never run more than six miles at a time in my life." "I picked the one thing I thought I would never do in my life, and that was an ironman competition," said Kieffer, an Air Combat Command operations research analyst. Wanting to show his support, Kieffer pledged to lead a 6-month fundraiser in her honor, culminating with an ironman competition, the "ultratriathlon," subjecting participants to a crucible of a 2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike ride and 26.2-mile run. Kieffer's love of triathlons started while in college when a friend's mother was fighting a battle with Lou Gehrig's disease. As they waited for their individual groups to begin, they reflected on their paths leading up to the competition. Their hearts raced and excitement grew as the culmination of their nearly 20 hour-a-week training regimens were about to be put to the test. Too much time and money spent on artificial life-support systems. focus on organizational longevity rather than impact. Unfortunately, too many business consultants and too many business owners, executives, managers, etc. And then there's the Catholic Church that's been around for approximately 1700, 1900, or 2000 years - depending on your interpretation of history.īut I would still question whether any organization or business will last forever, and 99.9999999999999999999% haven't lasted a century. Check out this clip-with pictures from the VH1 doc on the final recording session of the great Warren Zevon.įor those of us who work at transforming-or in some cases resuscitating-organizations and businesses, the lesson is the same, however difficult it is to accept. But the most moving of his compositions, to my ears, was the lyrical “Keep Me in Your Heart” which he started writing the day he was told his cancer was inoperable. The difference this individual made as an artist is writing and recording some of the smartest (and most brilliantly satiric) songs in the canon of rock-including “Lawyers, Guns and Money,” “Werewolves of London,” “Poor Poor Pitiful Me,” “Hasten Down the Wind,” and “Tenderness on the Block” (all covered by famous artists from Linda Ronstadt to The Wallflowers). (As he observed to David Letterman, "I might have made a tactical error in not going to a physician for 20 years.")
